IMPACT OF RELIGION ON ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN
INTRODUCTION:-
There are many religions being followed across the world and there is a huge amount of religious emphasis on architecture. Every religion has its cultural and architectural importance according to the history and literature of every particular religion. So there are some interesting facts and aspects you have to keep in mind while designing any building or residence or any other religious building for any specific religion.
DESIGNING PLACES OF WORSHIP
Every religion has its own tradition and culture to worship the deity . Similarly the places of worship of every religion have requirments of different design elements to retain the culture.
So the Christian religion has Church or Cathedral as there place of worship, Hindu religion has temple as their place of worship and Islam has the mosque as their place of worship. So as per the layouts we understand that there are certain spaces for every religious buildings that are to be provided or mandatory while designing the buildings of the particular religion.
The extiriors of these buildings are having heavy ornamentation according to the key factors of the religions that are mentioned in the literatures of the particular religion.
There are many other religions having the same criteria being followed.
DESIGNING RESCIDENCE
While designing the rescidence for any particular religion , there is one main factor that is to be taken into consideration i.e the cultural emphasis of that particular religion.
But there are some similarities in the residence of the every religion i.e there are small spaces desired for worship in every house. For example, there are small pooja spaces in Hindu rescidence, there are small prayer halls in Christian residence and similarly every religion has some or the other such provision in the house.
In the landscape elements, Christian houses have a Goroto being installed, Hindu houses have a particular deity idol being installed in the garden and similarly Buddhist houses have lord Buddha statue being installed in garden.
DESIGNING COMMERCIAL SPACES
While designing commercial spaces like malls, hotels, hospitals, there are no barriers of religion affecting the buildings as there is a secular environment in these type of buildings.
There are all types of people following different religion , who visit such commercial buildings. These buildings are service oriented and are designed accordingly.
Similarly there are other types of buildings such as educational buildings, administrative buildings and institutional buildings . These type of buildings also don’t have any religious barriers while designing those buildings.
CONCLUSION
Overall religion has impact on some type of buldings but while designing some buildings, there should be a secular approach.
